| To Get Married

Here are some crucial verbs that express the meaning “to get/be married.” In contrast to English terminology, Croatian distinguishes several verb forms. They are listed below:

(only the bride)

groom

(only the groom)

When to use each verb?

It happened.

Will happen, but no specific information when it will happen.

udati se

Ona se udala.

Ona će se udati.

oženiti se

On se oženio.

On će se oženiti.

It will happen in the near future and we know when it will happen.

udavati se

Ona se udaje u subotu.

ženiti se

On se ženi u subotu.

As you can see, Croatian has a specific verb that refers:

(1)  to a couple = vjenčati se

(2) only the bride = udati se / udavati se

(3) only the groom = oženiti se / ženiti se
