5 | Modul 2: Gramatika

Novogodišnji praznici

5 | 2 | Lekcija 1: Planovi za praznike

| From – To: OD - DO

To express that something is happening over a longer period of time, we need to use the prepositions od - do (from - to). Both prepositions require the Genitive case. For example:

Splitsko ljeto traje od 12. srpnja do 14. kolovoza.

The Split Summer Festival lasts from 12th of July to 14th of August.

5.2 Zadatak 1. Od kada do kada?

Look at the following events that are happening in Croatia every year. During what time period is each event organized. You will see months written in numerals. However, you should not use numbers in your answers. Be careful how we write dates in Croatian.

| Possessive Adjectives Sound Change

In previous units, you learned about possessive adjectives (that something belongs to someone or something). We will talk more about inanimate possessive adjectives in this lesson, focusing on irregularities in the process of making the possessive adjective form(s). When we say irregularities, that mostly means a set of sound changes that appear when creating inanimate possessive adjectives.

You already know that possessive adjectives are formed by adding a certain ending to a noun, such as in the following examples:

SAMOBOR (city)

DRNIŠ (city)

BRAČ (island)

singular

m

samoborski

drniški

brački

f

samoborska

drniška

bračka

n

samoborsko

drniško

bračko

plural

m

samoborski

drniški

brački

f

samoborske

drniške

bračke

n

samoborska

drniška

bračka

What about exceptions? Let us look at some of the most frequent changes (spelling/sound/stem changes):

zagrebačka zelena potkova

dubrovačke zidine

đakovačka ergela

| Adding -a- -čki

Zagreb

zagreb-a-čka zelena potkova

Dubrovnik

dubrov-a-čke zidine

Đakovo

đakov-a-čka ergela

Vinkovci

vinkov-a-čke jeseni

vinkovačke jeseni

korčulanska moreška

krčki most

| Adding -n- ski

Korčula

korčula-n-ska moreška

| Sound change when /k/, /c/ become /č/

Amerika

ameri-čka demokracija

Lipik

lipi-čko lječilište

Krk

kr-čki most

pariška četvrt

ciriško jezero

paška čipka

| Sound change when /g/, /h/, /s/, or /z/ become /š/

Pag

pa-ška čipka

Pariz

pari-ške boemske četvrti

Zurich  /Cirih/

ciri-ško jezero

5.2 Zadatak 2. Odakle je? Čije je?

Look at the following traditional souvenirs, tourist places, and popular events in Croatia. How would you form a possessive adjective for each of them?

Be careful, the list includes regular -ski, -ški, -čki endings and those with irregularities.

Be careful what gender the noun is. The possessive adjectives have to agree with the nouns they describe.

Example: Split – festival,  splitski festival
